Project Details
LearnMate is a mobile app created for self-learners who don’t want to learn in isolation. It lets people watch educational videos together, chat live, and join interest-based learning groups. The idea is to bring a sense of community and interaction to the often lonely journey of online learning.
Problem Statement
While platforms like YouTube offer endless educational content, self-learning can still feel like a solo battle. Most learners face issues like:Studying alone with no one to discuss things with
-
Getting stuck on a concept without a quick way to ask for help
-
No structured path or accountability
-
Lack of motivation without peer support

Apps like YouTube, Slack, and Discord are helpful—but they’re not really built for collaborative learning.
Why No Primary Research?
This was a portfolio project done within time limits, so assumptions were made based on:
Personal experience with e-learning
Industry trends
Best practices in design thinking
Competitive Analysis
Platform | Pros | Cons |
---|---|---|
YouTube | Huge free content library | No collaboration or tracking |
Discord | Real-time chat | Not education-focused |
Slack | Great for chat, file sharing | Meant for teams, not learners |
Udemy | Structured courses | Limited peer interaction |
Career focus | Not built for learning collaboration |
Market Insights
India’s EdTech industry is growing rapidly, expected to cross $10B by 2025
More learners are turning to free video content to upskill
But there’s a noticeable gap in platforms that support collaborative, real-time learning
The Goal
I wanted to design a space where learning feels social, motivating, and structured. A place where users can:
Watch videos together (like a virtual study group)
Chat or voice chat in real-time
Join communities around topics like Web Dev or Design
Post useful study content
Find like-minded learners to grow with

Key Features
Co-Watch Rooms
Join friends or group members to watch YouTube tutorials live and chat at the same time.
Real-Time Chat & Voice
Discuss doubts, exchange ideas, or just cheer each other on during learning sessions.
Topic-Based Groups
Communities like “HTML Heroes” or “Design Minds” help users connect with peers who share their goals.
Study Feed
A social-style feed where learners can post videos, tips, or articles that helped them.
Clean, Intuitive UI
Designed to be simple enough for anyone to use—no confusion, just learning.
High-fidelity Design
Finally. Wait is over. I focused on refining the design and adding more detail to the wireframes. I used Figma to create interactive screens that closely resembled the final product. This allowed me to test the design with users and gather feedback on the usability and overall experience.

Next Steps (If I had more time)
Conduct usability testing with real users
Add gamification (badges, streaks, etc.)
Introduce progress tracking and learning paths
Explore integration with Google Docs, GitHub, etc.
